Training Recap: Week of November 23

Another week of running and training has come and gone. Another full week of runs (among other training items), has been completed, and I am still not 100% sold on a goal race. I was pretty much to the point where I though I could commit to the Glass City Half (like most Spring races) but then I got a postcard in the mail...
It's like it is mocking me..

But I am trying not to jump the gun. I don't want to drop a distance or anything when I get discouraged like I did last year.

So I am trying to hold off. I don't need to jump into training TOO hard until after the first of the year, and I want to be 100% on what I really want to do this spring before I pull the trigger and spend some money on a big race.

So instead for now, let's look at another week of un-goal-guided running and training.

Monday: 5 miles with 4x30s strides.
Tuesday: 50 minutes elliptical, full body strength workout
Wednesday: 6 miles, easy pace
Thursday: Thanksgiving Day Race (recap to come)
Friday: OFF
Saturday: OFF
Sunday: dog walking

On Monday after talking to Coach Jenn, she sent me my schedule. Unfortunately, she had 7 miles and strides on there, but I had already run 5 for the day. Oh well. Done. I have already moved on from that one.

Friday Five IV

So it is Friday again! Yahoo for the fourth edition of the Friday Five!

1. I had a lovely Thanksgiving yesterday with my dad, J and Addie, and my in-laws. I am glad that J and I now live in a home big enough to host family gatherings. It helps me so much to be able to have them at my house. (I get really anxious often around a lot of people, and when I am home, it helps!)

2. Somehow, this gorgeous girl is getting SO BIG! I can hardly stand it.

Also, how did she get to be so beautiful? And that SMILE! Love her like crazy. In addition, we are going to start needing to work  on that "binky back" as she calls it (pacifier). I think it is time to deal with that.

3. More on Addie, back in September she was nearly potty trained. Then she developed a really nasty butt rash/yeast infection... thing. And so because her butt hurt, she didn't want to poop, so she got constipated, and then is cycled from there. Well, as a result, she regressed a bit on the potty training. But now, at the end of November, I think we are FINALLY back to where we were before. If we are not 100% before after Christmas, we are going to do the "naked" thing. She is MORE than ready, we just need consistency.
Other parents of kiddos who HAVE been potty trained? How do you handle car rides? Do you do pull ups? Or do you stop EVERY SINGLE TIME they ask to go? (Let me be clear here. I am not talking about a 3 hour drive to our hometown. I am talking about our twice daily 30-40 minute commute.)

4. I have a lot of vacation coming up in the next month or so. I think that is one of the perks of NOT being management. Your management feels obligated to take care of you. I am off pretty much every Monday and Friday from now until January. And the weeks where there are Friday holidays (Christmas. New Years.) I also have Thursday off!

5. I still have not selected a race goal, but I am definitely leaning in the direction of running a fast half. TBD, because I am still FOMO suffering, but that is what I am thinking right now...

Thankful Thursday

So I am not typically a "thankful thursday" poster, but since it is Thanksgiving today, I can make an exception, I think... Not to mention, I enjoy having something to write about...

So, let's talk about what I am thankful for on this beautiful Thanksgiving morning:

1. My family. I am so happy to have these two in my life. Sometimes they stress me out and I worry about the little one (ok, and the big one) all the time, but without them, I would be less of a person, I think.

2. Running. This often seems like the only thing that I have that can keep my stress levels at bay. I am CONSTANTLY reminding myself that I "get" to run, rather than I have to run. And that helps.
3. My job. Although we are going through a stressful time at the office, but I still enjoy the people that I work with very much. They are truly the best, and I am grateful to have all of them most days.

4. My health. I have more health issues that are weird than a lot of people. Between various blood issues and dizziness, plus my strange habit of falling down and hurting my elbow, I am overall a very healthy person. I have learned and developed a healthy relationship with food and exercise, finally, and I am very happy to have it.

A weekend home

I wanted to write a little update about how the weekend went at our house when there was no traveling for a marathon, no twenty mile run, no travel to a hometown (we seem to be on the road a LOT lately), and just us... our family...

So I still planned on getting a "long" (that term is relative at the moment) run in, so J and I went to bed rather early on Friday night. My alarm went off at 5:00 am, and unfortunately my dogs went crazy, so J woke up too...  He ended up staying up. At 7 am, bundled up with a hat, gloves, and multiple layers, I headed out the door with plans to run 8 in just over an hour.

After my run and shower, while J got his own workout done (treadmill in the basement), I got Addie ready for the day. J had gotten her fed while I was out on my run. We headed out to the grocery early because we had to shop for all of our Thanksgiving goodies! We purchased our turkey, ingredients to make sliders (a fave of J and his family!) and ingredients for my dad's stuffing. My SIL is taking care of fruit (for the 5 kids that will be there, plus anyone else) and mashed potatoes. My MIL is taking care of desserts and a big salad. None of us are sweet potato casserole or green bean casserole people, so we went with fruit and salad. Whatever works!

After we got home, I fed Addie and got her down for a nap, and J settled in to do some work on the couch. I was planning on getting the Halloween decorations away (yes, I know I should have done that WEEKS ago, but between Indy and then being in Toledo last week, it just was not happening!) I have been listening to this audio drama, and I am HOOKED.
It is science fiction, so if that is your style, I recommend it. BUT it isn't quite finished yet (apparently there are still 4 chapters to be released!) and so now I am stuck WAITING until the rest gets released. Anyone have any podcast recommendations. I like fitness. science fiction. and true crime (serial, obvis).

After the Buckeyes lost (ugh, we are STRUGGLING with this one in my house), we needed Sunday to be a little MORE relaxed. J made homemade biscuits and gravy for breakfast (yes, I married a man who loves COOKING!) and we put on the Lion King for our little Simba lover (her current favorite song is Hakuna Matata. Expect a singing/dancing video in the future). At naptime I started decorating for Christmas. Yes, I realize that it is not Thanksgiving yet, but you know what? I got my village up. That is a WINTER item. Therefore, it is acceptable.

We made a simple dinner that night, that was a hit with the whole family, even little miss eats-only-yogurt.

Updated running - no GOAL race, but a race!

So somehow, it is Thanksgiving week, we have reached the end of November, the beginning of the holiday season and we are on a rapidly moving collision course toward the end of the year. At least, that is what it feel like.

I have been running regularly, and I had a call with Coach Jenn yesterday. Granted, I have not been able to establish definitively my goal race for spring, but I am making some progress. I am not sure when I will finally make a decision. It is definitely starting to stress me out that I have not made a decision. So for now, I am just trying to take a breath, relax, and just keep running for right now.

Because remember, I GET to run. I wonder if I can remember that always through my next training cycle.

I went for a run yesterday, 5 miles with 4x30s striders, at around 7:15 am. It was a not-so-pleasant reminder about winter in Ohio. It was below 30* for the first time all year, and I was frigid. I wore my CW-X tights, and I decided I need other tights. Warmer ones. Because darn it, my ass was FREEZING!  I think a new pair of Lesleys is in my future. Because its DAMN COLD!

I got my latest schedule from Coach Jenn yesterday as well. I still have not selected a race, but at this point in time, it does not really matter that much. I am just base building and starting to try and get my legs to GO again. I feel like I have been struggling in the turnover department since the marathon, but likely that is still me shaking all of the lead out. Strides have been helping for sure, and I know that as I continue to get my legs back underneath me I will be able to continue accelerating. I am racing a 10K on Thanksgiving, and would like to PR.

Full disclosure... I have PR'd in the 10K distance nearly every single time I run more than 10K these days. My 10K was achieved the week after I PR'd a half and less than one year after Addie was born. So I know that I should be able to knock that one out of the water, even on a hilly course. Originally, when I was supposed to have Chicago as my goal race, and therefore have over a month to get back into running, I was going to go for a sub-45. Unfortunately, I have only been running for about two weeks (well, race day will be the 2 week "anniversary") so I think it is very unlikely that my legs will run that fast. But I am going to play it by ear and see what happens.

I am seeing lots of "runner gift guides" out there, and I am thinking on my own, but we will see...  It may be out here later. Depending...

Training Recap: Week of November 16

So I have not yet managed to come up with a next step. A new goal. A new plan. I am leaning toward a half marathon for the spring, going for a PR, but obviously, as you have seen from my FOMO post, I am not sure that I am ready to commit to that yet, because then I might not have a chance to do other things!  Ha ha. That is ridiculous. Right?

So let's take a look at the week.

I don't have a schedule yet from the coach, so I figured I was just going to go mostly with convo pace/however I felt like running miles.

Monday: 5 miles with 4x30s strides
Tuesday: 55 minutes of strength training (took the time to DO the strength workout Coach Jenn gave me. I should do better at that next cycle)
Wednesday: 5 miles with 4x30s strides
Thursday: 5 miles, core
Friday: PT exercises, core
Saturday: 8 miles
Sunday: Jasyoga and PT exercises

Overall, a good week, and I am glad to be back on the "regular running schedule" train. I cannot WAIT to talk to Jenn and REALLY nail down a plan.

Friday Five III

It is kind of crazy that I am already on the third iteration of the Friday Five! I am definitely loving having a go-to post that allows me to have a much easier time composing a post for a certain day. So let's look at some weekly random items.

1. My little nugget made a lunch out of construction paper. She seemed to be having fun.
I do love her daycare. They have such solid teachers there. It is definitely a little school and not a daycare center. I think it has always been that for her. Even when she was very little.

2. I took out the #shortshortslongsleeves for a run this week.
Stride short mini in money (purchased during the recent factory sale) and the wazzie wool baselayer, my first wazzie. I purchased the wazzie during the reflective gear sale.

3. Last weekend in Toledo, I found something that I MUST get for Addie for Christmas. Or rather, Santa must get Addie for Christmas.
PICASSO TILES. These are seriously the coolest things ever. I think I will play with them as much as Addie will. My cousin Liz and her son Sam (and my Aunt Teresa) were visiting my mom last weekend as well, and Sam has these tiles. Addie was playing with these instead of watching Frozen. So as you know, this is a pretty big deal.

4. I have been dealing with some post-marathon/light running bloat lately. It definitely has my abs in disappear mode. I am hoping that as I get back to running and away from my weird food choices (post marathon enjoyment) I can get my stomach back to its unbloated state. Ugh. And running more this week, that obviously will help as well.

5. I am starting to explore options for my next race. Nothing has been selected yet, but I am planning on running a fast half. Not a full next. I think that will give me the mental break that I might need as far as training and progress go.

I am suffering from an affliction

FOMO. Fear of Missing Out.

Have you heard this before? The first time I figured out what it actually stood for was when Oiselle was having a sample sale in Seattle. Obviously, I do not live in Seattle, so that was a bummer in and of itself. And FOMO struck. When I received an email from Oiselle claiming their "FOMO Sale", I had to google what that stood for. And yes, I had it about that sale. In addition, I definitely have it in other aspects of my life right now.

Right now, FOMO is impacting EVERYTHING in my life. Let's take a look.

  1. What if I don't run a marathon? What if I miss my chance at a BQ?
  2. What if I don't run in Toledo in the spring? It is my favorite race, but if I stick to the half, it seems late in the season to add on a spring/summer marathon.
  3. I am 32. What if I miss my opportunity to have another baby? Should I have another baby? Does Addie need a sibling? (Too be clear, I am not pregnant. I don't even know if I really want a second. I know I feel sad about the fact that Addie is BIG now, and I miss the tiny baby part. But that part is very short-lived, so I don't know that this means I need another child. TBD?)
  4. My job. I feel like I need to figure out EXACTLY what the next step is and the WHOLE picture, rather than just taking the small step and continuing to do my current job with a step up in responsibilities. I have to know NOW if I want to be the CFO or the COO (or just hang out comfortably where I am forever.)
I have no idea what this is so immediate, I have no idea why there is such a need to figure it all out right now. For some reason, this is weighing on me, constantly, and I am definitely in the middle of a struggle-fest relating to this.

Some fun stuff

Today I feel like writing. I don't have a particular plan for this post or where it will end up, but I feel like writing.

Things have not yet completely let up at work, although they are definitely getting better at this point, which I certainly appreciate. I am grateful (for once) for my choice in career because although my particular team and position was hard hit with a ton of stuff earlier in the year, right now we are not too overwhelmed with work. This was a bigger hit on the technology front. At least some of the guys in technology are back to seeing their families on the weekend. They weren't for some time there.

Addie's daycare sent me this picture of her napping. She really is the sweetest thing ever, even when she is insisting that she is a princess. I love her so much.

Last weekend, Addie and I took a trip to Toledo to visit family. Rachel and I had some plans that we had to take care of, and while we were there, my dad took the initiative to get all of us kids together and have thanksgiving. It made me feel sad that J was not with us. I think he was a little sad too.

But we tried to see if we could get a cute picture with Parker and Addie together, in their turkey hats that Rachel got for them. And hilarity ensues...

As you can see...  Disastrous. Trying to get Addie and Parker to BOTH sit still, smile, keep their hands out of their faces, etc, laughable.

IMM - The race

My alarm went off at 5:05 am. This is a pretty normal time for a long run day for me. In fact, I often wake up earlier!

So I was up and getting ready to run the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon!
My pre-race eats:
2 cups of coffee (crappy hotel room coffee)
1 wheat sandwich thin
1 tbsp of skippy natural peanut butter

I consumed these between 5 and 6 and then proceeded to twiddle my thumbs in my hotel room, just getting more and more worked up. J was clearly TRYING to help me (thank you J! I mean it!) but I was so nervous I was having none of it. He would ask me what the plan was and I was like "there is no plan! I need to finish!" etc (AKA - I'm freaking out!) And yeah... I am pretty much a terrible person. I was calm all week long, but then when crunch time came, I freaked.
I even LOOK freaked out.

I think I just had myself overworked about a DNF in Chicago and how I felt like that truly could NOT be an option here. I may have put a little bit too much emphasis on OTHERS expectations and not enough on my own. Because I was feeling like my coworkers had done some awesome stuff for me, and I needed to make sure that I finished the race to their expectations. I didn't even send an email out telling them to track me and stuff. I was too nervous.

At 7, I walked over to the room next door where Karen and Chelsa were and continued to not speak - if you have been around me and I am not talking...  I am really nervous. They grabbed Chris from the next room and we headed out to the start line. We got over to that general area, and got in line to go to the bathroom. The line was not too long and we were finished with that quickly and then went into the lobby of the Westin to wait in the warmth. While we were in there, we spotted the pacers. Chelsa pointed out the 3:35s to me, and I decided to introduce myself. I stuck with them, left the Westin with them, said goodbye to my friends, and was off to the corral. Indianapolis had seeded corrals if you supplied times to support you being in them. I was in C along with my pacers.

By 8 am, we were off.

Miles 1-7
It took a little while to find a rhythm here. As is typical, the first mile or so was pretty tight, so I just focused on my stride and trying to find a rhythm. It was cold still, so I was trying to get my legs rolling and hopefully the pain/stiffness that was in my left hip (and  had been there all week!) went away. But I was stiff. I was also having some issues with my headphones, my music kept turning off and that was stressing me out. But around mile 3 I got that figured out. I stuck right around the pace group, maybe slightly behind, but I was only experiencing tightness at this point, no pain. My hopes were that it would loosen up in time, and I would find a rhythm. I cross through the 10K in 51:13, an 8:16 pace, or slightly slower than my goal. But I was with the pacers so I was not too worried. Shortly after that we ran through mile 7 and the half marathoners split from us. At this point, I had a finish in my mind (if I was doubting it, I would have turned with the half people.)

Miles 8-13.1
Right after we got through the half split, one of the pacers came up to check on me. My hip stiffness had migrated at this point to a very tight glute on the OPPOSITE side. The pacer said to me "how are you feeling? You are looking strong!" I responded, I am doing ok. That was kind of all I could say at this point. I already was feeling a little bit rough with that glute issue and just wanted to press on. Luckily for me, my legs were finally warm and ready to run, so I was able to kick it up a little through here. I crossed the halfway mat at 1:46:51, an 8:10 pace (therefore picking it up a bit) and just ahead of the pace group.

Miles 13.1-18.6
Right after passing through the timing mat, we entered a park with a bike trail, it was not quite like the bike trail here, in fact, I am pretty sure it is a road, but whatever. We were alongside a grassy area. When leaving the park, there was a small incline. This was the moment for me. I had been a little bit locked up, but climbing this small hill (to be clear, this is smaller than anything I would run on a daily basis here in Blue Ash - where I work) did me in. My cheek was SO locked up that I started to question my ability to finish. In both mile 16 and mile 17 I stepped off the course to stretch. That resulted in the two slowest miles in the race. At this point, I decided I was finishing NO MATTER WHAT, and if I needed to stretch, I would. I crossed the 30K mark (18.6 miles) in 2:37:55 (8:29 pace). Look at that DROP. Ugh.

Miles 18.7-Finish
I kept up this run as well as you can and walk when you need to plan after that. I was trying to be an encouraging runner to others that were struggling in this part (and I think EVERYONE was struggling in this part), and tried to keep smiling and remember "I GET to run." I think you can see that in my pictures. I saw J around mile 24, he really was trying to help me pick it up - like I could make up for 10 minutes at this point, but I truly appreciate it. He got this shot of me.
He helped me pick it up, then a bird (I have since found out since then her name is Sarah) helped me at mile 25, and I managed to pull a sub-8 pace for the last 1.2 miles. So HUGE thanks to J and Sarah for that much needed boost. I crossed the line in 3:45:15. More than 10 minutes off my goal, but smiling.

And there is something to be said about smiles.

Training Recap: Week of November 9

So, I have not yet determined what I am going to train for next. I have made ZERO decisions (although I am hoping to PR a 10K on Thanksgiving - my PR is TERRIBLY out of date). But this week was still a full week of workouts - although not running ones!

It is weird to not currently be working toward a goal, but it is the "offseason" right now. I am scheduled to talk to the Coach later on today, so hopefully she can provide some insight as to what SHE is thinking for November and December - and on to Spring when I will likely be training for SOMETHING even though I am not sure what yet.

So let's look at the non-running (well, minimal running?) I did last week.

Monday: 29 minutes Jasyoga
Tuesday: 30 minutes elliptical, core
Wednesday: full body strength
Thursday: 3 miles, 8:30 pace - what felt comfortable.
Friday: Jasyoga
Saturday: 4 miles easy
Sunday: Jasyoga reset and core

Such a weird week. By Wednesday I had already had enough of the gym (to be clear, I was only there twice, I did yoga from my home) and I just needed to get out for a run. So Thursday I decided that I was not going to stick to my plan of waiting a full week. I was going to run three miles and run them however I felt like.

Friday Five II

I like this. I like the fact that I can walk into Friday with a plan for my post, even though it generally gets to be relatively random.

1. I am starting to go stir crazy with no running. I am taking these legs out for an easy 3-4 tomorrow. After all, it has been a week!

2. I somehow gave birth to the girliest girl on the planet. Princesses are her favorite thing, and in fact, she IS a Princess.
This was her at daycare as she ran up and down along the mirror saying "I a Princess! Princess Addie!"

3. I came home to a mess on Monday. Which immediately led to Addie yelling "Naughty Teek!" Yeah, it was definitely Teek (Zeus gets crated during the day. He feels better about it, and so do we.)
She got into the garbage. This is NOT the worst of the mess. The worst was found in the living room. A diaper, that had apparently been pooped in, but all the poop had been eaten out. Disgusting.

4. I have been reading "Daring Greatly" for this month's #LDRClub selection. So far, it is a very different pick than our first book, however, I definitely can find myself identifying with it a lot. Looking forward to finishing it for sure.

IMM - Post race

After finishing the race, feeling a bit emotional about running a marathon and needing to shake off some feelings about "not giving it everything I had"...  I moved on. I sat in the grass in my hat and laid down on my heat sheet for a few minutes before even texting J to let him know that I was done. I just needed some time. Within 5 minutes I test him, he let me know where he was, and I staggered to my feet to meet him halfway between where I was and where he was (in front of the Westin, which was on the other side of the street and close to the finish - I was at the end of the runner's area, so about a block further down from the finish).

After running in to J, we took a break so I could eat something and get some warmer clothes on (while I was sweating during the race, now that it was over, I was freezing!)
After hanging out long enough for me to eat my post race picky bar (which took FOREVER. I was not hungry), we walked back to our hotel and hopped in our cars. Because J met me in Indy, we had to drive separately home - that sucked, but it is what it is.

On the drive home, I chatted with Jen, reflected on the race. She advised me about not thinking about "what's next" until at LEAST Wednesday (FYI - this has been a struggle!) and we talked about how a year ago I would have been absolutely THRILLED with that time. Because a year ago (well, slightly more than that... pre-Columbus) I had no idea that a BQ time was possible for me. I was already in a pretty good place about missing my goal, but talking to her cemented that.

After arriving in Cincinnati, J and I consolidated cars and headed out to get my post race meal. It was early for dinner, but I was starting to get hungry. I am a post-race burger & beer kind of girl.
J and I went to Flipdaddies which is pretty much my favorite local burger joint. I had a whiskey bacon burger and grilled mac and cheese for my side (this was my "i ran a marathon today!" poor food choices selection). I also had a beer called "sparky" brewed by a micro in Northern Kentucky, Braxton Brewing. It was pretty good. But the food on my plate I came home with. I was hungry, but filled up FAST (Monday was apparently my hungriest day!)

I tried to NOT think about running and enjoy the football that was on tv, but I could barely walk. I have never hurt so badly after a race before.

And now, all that is left is to talk about the race! (But it will have to wait...)

IMM - the good, the bad, and the ugly

I haven't gotten around to completely writing a recap yet, because honestly, I am still recovering (physically and mentally) but I have started working on it. But for now, I want to review things at a higher level, while it is still fairly fresh in my mind.

Hopefully that is going to help keep things fresh and at top of mind so I can figure out where to go from here:

The Good

  1. I ran the first half slightly faster than what I would need to in order to come in RIGHT at 3:35. I was fairly comfortable running this pace for longer than this distance.
  2. When you realize your goal is not going to happen, you can do two things. Either you can quit, or you can enjoy the run because YOU LOVE RUNNING. In this race, I did the latter, and I am a MUCH stronger runner because of it.
  3. I ran a marathon. This always has to be good.
The Bad
  1. My hip had been hurting all week last week. ALL WEEK. And I felt like it was just tight because stretching it (leaning to the opposite side) felt awesome. So I spent time with the foam roller, etc. But that did me in around mile 16 due to a potentially compensated stride. My right glute (left hip was hurting) was LOCKED and I couldn't run on it anymore.
  2. I heard this was a beautiful course, but I was so locked in, I didn't enjoy it.
The Ugly
  1. Miles 16 & 17. Stopped to stretch during both of these miles. Their times are 10:44 and 10:00. A pretty far cry from the 8:05-8:10 that I hoped to maintain.
  2. Mile 16. Again. This is where I seriously considered quitting. My butt hurt SO MUCH and I was feeling a little defeated about not reaching my goal. I almost sat down on the curb (next to the light pole that I was using for balance while stretching) and started crying.
  3. My time. While in the big picture, it is not ugly, it is ugly considering I was trained for a time 15 minutes faster than this. 3:45:15.
So there you go. Hopefully a little something to tide you over until I get around to an actual recap.

IMM - Pre-race

The Indianapolis Monumental Marathon went down on Saturday. If you follow me on instagram or twitter (hey!!! Follow me!), you already know that it was not as planned. But it is water under the bridge and it will now go down as a marathon of legendary proportions. :)

But for now, we are not going to talk about the race itself. Let's look at my inspiring (ha!) prerace plans. I had taken a half day off, and was grateful to be granted it, considering everything that has been going on at the office. After I got out of a meeting on Friday morning, I briefly chatted with my boss, and we talked about what I was working on, what was going on, and that, well, I might as well head to Indy and get a headstart on the road. Boom, says I.

So by 11 I was running to target (needed a car charger for my phone!), texting Karen to say I was driving and heading about 1:45 west to Indianapolis. Apparently Indy does not use ParkWhiz on the reg, like Chicago does, so they were only offering limited parking, and if you tried to change your times to overnight (like I was and like I did in Chicago) you were left with zero options. As a result, I planned just to park in the same garage that J and I parked in when we were there 4 weeks ago (we went there on the way home from Chicago).

After stopping about halfway there to get some chicken nuggets and diet coke (what? I hadn't eaten lunch and I was STARVING), I arrived in Indy, and I was able to check in right away. I got into my room, text Karen to say I would wait for her for the expo and kicked my feet up.
Yep. That is food network.

When Karen arrived, I went to the room next to mine (that was going to be hers!) and we headed over to the expo together. Now this expo was TEENY by the standards of any other marathon I have run. I told J it was even small compared to Glass City (it was!) but it was nice, easy to get in and out. Karen and I got our bibs, shirts, etc, and then walked around to check out the vendors. I ALMOST bought some Oiselle that was on sale, but talked myself out of it since I just had a wazzie wool and factory order in the last two weeks. I bought J some honey stinger gummies, and that was it.

After that, I again headed back to the room for some feet on my bed action. I also got "Flat Emily" ready to go. This was something I DID NOT do in Chicago.
Obviously, not having a flat emily caused a DNF. I won't make that mistake again.

At 5 pm, when all of the old folks were going out for their early bird specials, we marathoners walked over to Rock Bottom for dinner. I got my prerace beer and some food and chilled with Karen and Chelsa. We were chatting and discussing the race (except for the pink elephant in the room - my goal!) and Karen was giving us some course insight because she had run this course previously. I ordered a pizza to bring back to the hotel for J - he was meeting me there, he couldn't leave work early that day - and we headed back.

The Clydesdales were in town! I have never seen them before, even when I went to Budweiser. Those are some HUGE horses!

After returning to my room, I hung out with Jason, watched TV and fell asleep to the Maze Runner, my alarm was set to go off at 5 am (8 am race time).

Indianapolis Marathon: Week of November 2

And it is over...  Chicago, Indianapolis... whatever my path was this fall, it doesn't matter anymore because it is over.

So let's take a quick look at last week and see what my final week of workouts looked like prior to the race (the short answer? pretty darn similar to the week before Chicago, but with one less day, therefore, one less run!)
Monday: 6 mile run plus 4x30s strides with Charlie (our first run together in MONTHS!)
Tuesday: the dozen (try it. hard as hell)
Wednesday: 5 miles with 2 at marathon pace (they ended up at 7:55 and 7:47)
Thursday: a Jasyoga video (I finally sucked it up and subscribed - loving it so far)
Friday: 3 mile + 3x30s strides + Jasyoga meditiation
Saturday: Indy Monumental
Sunday: lots and lots of foam rolling and stretching. Recovery at its finest during the #chasethebird challenge!

Hopefully I can get around to writing about the race sometime this week, but for now you will have to view stuff on twitter!

Friday Five I

So, I decided that it might be time to join a very long time running blogger go-to. I mean, if nothing else, it can give me a standard. That is a good thing. So, how about a Friday Five!

1. I am running A MARATHON tomorrow. I am overall feeling better, more calm, going into this race than I was feeling a month ago. I hate to jump to conclusions prior to the race, but at the very least, I am happy that I put myself out there and tried to go for it again. I feel ready though.

2. One week ago was the little Roo's class Halloween party. In my ongoing effort to really be supportive of my family, I left work early and went to the party. At age 2, there were not a lot of games to play or anything, they mostly just had really fun snacks (and a lot of them!) and some parents came. Addie seemed to have a good time in her "Halloween Princess Dress".

3. I know that it is November, but we are definitely into legitimate fall weather every day (instead of just spotty days) here in Ohio. My feelings about that have been hit and miss. Somedays, I have been like "I LOVE THIS!" and other days I just want it to be warm. I have to remind myself how much easier it is to run in these temps (well, after I get warmed up it is easier).

4. I know we are not past Thanksgiving yet, but I have made some decent headway in my Christmas shopping. Not with J or Roo yet, but with the OTHER items I need for gifts. Friends, coworkers, siblings, parents, etc. I am calling that a win.

5. I have no plans for after tomorrow as of yet. No running schedules, no races. Nothing. I need to take time, digest, and THEN jump in and figure out what is next.

Addie's First (real) Halloween

So, this was the first Halloween that we really celebrated with Addie. Her first Halloween, she was less than three months old. So we did dress up, but we only stopped over at our next door neighbors house to visit for a few minutes. It was a rainy night, so we had very few trick or treaters.
Mama and Baby Snow White on Addie's first Halloween. Also - look at that bald girl! By the way, Momma and Roo Snow White are likely to make another appearance in a few years. These things happen when you love one particular princess like I do (Roo loves ALL princesses. Including Princess Fiona - Shrek).

Last year, it was raining and disgusting. It was the first Halloween in our new house. And Addie came home from daycare sick. She was not a happy little nugget. She stayed in the house with me and ate her dinner and then we snuggled while J passed out candy to the neighborhood kids (and the kids that got shipped in from all over - we have a good neighborhood for trick-or-treat). Despite the gross conditions, we had a TON of kids and ran out of candy.

This year, we were ready! We had a costume. We purchased candy. Addie was not sick. It was not raining (too much).
So here is the little nugget pre-trick-or-treat!

Princess Minnie Mouse (ok, just minnie mouse, but with the long dress, she kept saying that she was a Princess). And yes, that is the dress up dress that Grandpa (my dad, or Pee-Pa, as Addie says) got her for her birthday.

She was SUPER excited when I drew the nose on her (black eyeliner) and she wanted everyone to see that. She wanted to keep looking at her nose in the mirror, and she was pretty proud of her pumpkin as well. But she did want to fill up the pumpkin with various other things (puzzle pieces, books, socks, etc) before we went out trick-or-treating.

When we finally made it out, we went to about 8 houses before she wanted me to pick her up and carry her. That was the part that told me that we are ready to go home. So, trick-or-treat number one? Winning.

It's getting Chilly!

So now that we are into the colder fall and winter weather, I think it might be time to share some of my fave cold weather running items! Yes, I pretty much stick to Oiselle because I believe that they make the best stuff, but that can't be helped.

First up, the Lesley tight.
Pictured and linked here are the NEW Lesley tight, which I do not have. I have the original, but I don't think it has changed too much, from what I can tell from the description. They are the warmest of all of the Oiselle tights that I have, and that is necessary in Ohio!

On top, I like to go Lux layer on top of just a standard tech tee. 
This layer is warm and fitted to the body, but the cut up the side (shown in this pic) makes sure that it sit on your hips and doesn't ride up. Plus... Thumbholes.

When I am wearing tights, I typically do not wear long compression socks under them unless it is REALLY cold (and we have not gotten there yet). So I have been sticking with my current fave footie socks. My Bombas.
For a hat and gloves, I just wear some basics that I received for a Christmas gift last year. They are not made for running, necessarily, but they work (although I certainly have my eyes on that lux ear warmer that Oiselle has going on this fall.

Personality Knowledge

I have been trying to figure out some things about myself. I figure the more I learn, the more prepared I may be to figure out the mental game and confidence that I need in both running and my professional life.

So I took an online personality thing the other day...  It was your basic meyers-briggs test, but you picked this or that. As I was taking it, I realized, holy smokes, I am a bit of an enigma. I seem to have the opposite feelings about different things as this was going along. Like, I am a HUGE list maker (super organized) but my personal belongings are a disaster (scatterbrained).

So here are the results:

Hmm...  Despite all of the strange things that I perceived as contradictions when I was taking the little quiz, this seemed to make sense. I think that maybe describes me quite well?

Indianapolis Marathon: Week of October 26

So now that I let the cat out of the bag that I am planning on running a marathon still this fall after a disastrous trip to Chicago, I suppose I can call these training logs what they are... training for the Indianapolis marathon.

I am sure if nothing else, that makes me going out for an 18 miler on a Saturday a little bit more understandable. But this week I did not do that. Because I am already back in taper mode. (Now THIS is the kind of training cycle I can get behind. 4 weeks, long runs of 12, 18, 12, and race day? Sign me up!)

So after last weekend's 18 miler (with 8 at marathon pace), I am back to easing down the mileage. Again. And this time, I think I am ready for it. So here is a rundown of last week:

Monday: 7 miles, 4x 30s strides, core
Tuesday: OFF
Wednesday: 5 miles, easy pace
Thursday: 6x800 @ approx 3:26 pace, 4x 30s strides, warm up and cool down
Friday: OFF
Saturday: 12 miles, last 4 at marathon pace (8:00-8:05)
Sunday: walk

So, another good week, I felt pretty good overall. The biggest thing is that I am mentally feeling better and more prepared. And if nothing else, more calm! Maybe I needed my Chicago disaster?
