Training Recap: Week of February 22

Another week of running/training and another week of solid running has gone by. The goal race is now only 9 weeks away, and I have only 9 weeks more of really super solid work to do before I start to look ahead and decide what my new goal is going to be.
9 FREAKING WEEKS!

So let's take a look at the last week's worth of training.

Monday: 8.56 miles, 8:03 average pace, 4x30s strides. Core. Sushi Wars 2.0
Tuesday:7 miles, 8:38 average pace. Sushi Wars 2.0
Wednesday: 50 minutes elliptical, Core, Sushi Wars 2.0
Thursday: 7.57 mile run, with 5 at tempo pace, and 4x30s strides. Sushi Wars 2.0
Friday: 7 mile run, easy pace. Core. Sushi Wars 2.0
Saturday: 12 mile run. Sushi Wars 2.0
Sunday: OFF

Ahh... This is a week of NAILED IT if ever there was... Haha, that sounded ridiculous. 42.13 running miles. Sushi wars for 6 days. 3 days of core.

I will talk about sushi wars sometime later in the week, but it is a strength workout.

Friday Five XVII

Friday friday friday! Tonight starts the weekend!
1. Like I said yesterday, I went back to therapy this week. I am pretty pleased with myself for getting back to Amy and trying to continue to make progress on this puzzle that is ME...  I know that handling all of that is going to really continue to help me to make myself a priority, And I am going to continue to work on it. I am really going to get back in the habit of my multiple day check ins and working through what I have learned from her over the last year and a half. I often make progress and then fall apart, so this time will be different. Don't we all say that EVERY time?

2. Last weekend, I took J to Indianapolis for his birthday. We hit a few breweries, drank some beers, went to a restaurant that we had never been to, and I reminded myself that I want to run that marathon again. I think that J had a good birthday.

3. Addison was insistent for WEEKS that she wanted to get J "pancakes" for his birthday. So after asking her several time when we were out shopping, I just went with it.
New nonstick skillets. Maple syrup. Yummy pancake mix. and a nice new spatula. Nailed it.

4. I plan to get our taxes filed this weekend. I know that getting a refund means that I have given the government an interest free loan, but at the same time, I am always glad if we get a good amount of money back. It just feels good.

5. I am so ready to look back at the progress I made in February on my annual goals. I am just feeling STRONG right now, which makes me feel awesome. I think I should be able to get that post up and running mid next week? I have high hopes.

Back to work

I received a comment on my blog post about my track workout from early in the week (last week's track workout) from a teammate from my Ragnar team last summer about how it was her first trip to the track in a long time and she was feeling a little nervous.

So, I get that, but it was about something else...

On Tuesday this week, I went back to my therapist for the first time since June 30, 2015.

Whoa, it has been a while. When she told me that it had been since then, I was blown away that it had been so long. I suppose in some ways, I almost felt like it had been longer, but with everything that I have going on, I was definitely going to need to be back in there and just have someone to bounce everything off of...
Yeah, that is possible... Although the other 13 problems are potentially legit.

After some conversations with my dad, my therapist, and even my coach over the last few weeks, I have come up with the following prioritization:
1. Emily
2. Addison
3. family
4. Everything else

You have to be ok with putting yourself first, and it does not make you selfish. I have to remember that, and I have to keep to it.I have to be able to be ok with all of these things and make sure that I am really working hard to keep myself in that number one spot. I think that sometimes the world can make us as women think that we need to talk care of other people first, everyone else before we take care of ourselves, but that just is not sustainable. At least not healthily sustainable.

While this is something that we read over and over in women's magazines, blogs, running websites, motherhood articles, etc, that WE need to take care of OURSELVES first, the guilt is still there, you still feel like you may not be a good mother, or a good spouse, or whatever because you actually made an effort to put your needs ahead of someone elses... You are wrong. That makes you a BETTER woman...

Like I said, we read this everywhere, all the time. I just honestly HOPED that by getting it all out there in writing would help me to really express it, really BELIEVE it....

Busy at the office + cute Addie

I am writing this post on Monday morning, my plan is for it to go live on Wednesday. But here on Monday morning, I am not sure how I am going to get through the week. It is one of those things where I am struggling to think about all of things that need to be completed and check all of the boxes this week. I mean, there are a lot of things that need to be done and a lot of things to check off this week, and I am overwhelmed about it. Already. At 9:40 am on Monday morning... not a great place to start the week.

But I have worked through my to-do list, gotten it all written up, and that has helped. So I am feeling much better right now, and feeling more comfortable.

But between all of the projects that are going on, the audit, etc, I am really getting overwhelmed and having a lot going on at the office. I know that eventually, hopefully, we will be back to business as usual, but I keep hoping for that and in two and a half years (since I came back to work after Addison was born), it has not happened yet.

On the plus side, I am always busy?

So instead of talking about my boring job, how about some pictures of a cute two year old?

Last week on the track

So because I love talking about times when I get to run fast (for me, speed is definitely a relative thing), I want to look at last week's track workout in more detail. I was (for once) confident in my abilities to run the splits that I had scheduled. They were not that overwhelming, and I love hitting the track, even if I am just running slowly and have chosen to go there because it is nice and flat and has a good surface.

So let's look at the prescribed workout first.
1 mile warm up.
2x2 miles in 15:40, 45s walking recovery
4x400m at 1:42, 1:38, 1:42, and 1:36, 45s walk recovery
1 mile cool down.

So running at 15:40 for 2 is not overly fast for me, it is a solid tempo pace, running marathon goal pace. So I felt ok going into my first 2 mile interval. So let's just take a quick view of the results.

Warm up: 8:35
2 miles: 15:01
2 miles: 15:07
4x400: 1:38, 1:35, 1:39, 1:33
Cool down: 8:22

So I ran 7.4 miles in right around 58 minutes. I did generally stick to the walking plan. When my watch beeped I immediately slowed to a jog, and then when I had about 5 of the 45 seconds left, I would start jogging again to get my legs moving a little bit before the actual interval started. And that teeny jog helped to get my legs moving and rolling right into the proper pace quickly, which was what I wanted to be able to do.

Clearly, I ran this a little hot. I am not sure why EVERYTHING is so hot these days. i want to be able to settle into my appropriate paces, because I don't want to overdo things especially with adding on another day of running this training cycle. But I am working hard and trying to take my recovery/easy days seriously. Hopefully they take care of everything else.

Training Recap: Week of February 15

It is another week closer to GCM, and I am feeling like I am in a really solid place for approximately 8 weeks out. I have been running my splits as I am supposed to, and really hammering on the miles. Charlie keeps telling me that the fact that I added one more run per week (I am at 5 + one day of xt) is going to be a game changer for me.
We shall see if that holds up to be true... if it really becomes a game changer... likely when I start training for a fall marathon.

So let's look at the week.

Monday: 8.8 miles. 8 miles on the treadmill, progressive convo pace, and then 8x0.10 on the indoor track 1 on, 1 off. CORE
Tuesday: 7 miles, treadmill, 8:26 average
Wednesday: 50 minutes elliptical, CORE
Thursday: 7.4 miles. Speedwork on the track.
Friday: 7.5 miles, 8:33 pace easy... outdoors, CORE
Saturday: 14 miles with 3x2 miles at marathon pace
Sunday: OFF

Heavy mileage for half training, right? I am LOVING it. It is making me feel pretty great.

44.7 miles run

Friday Five XVI

Yahoo! Friday Five time!
1. I have had a solid week of training again where I managed to get back on the core work train. Thank goodness. I was missing doing it, and I needed to really get back to the point where I am doing that consistently. I (as of this morning) have done core twice this week, and am planning on doing it again tonight.

2. I am buried in podcasts. I keep finding new ones, which I am loving. Thank goodness. It is all I am listening too during runs these days.

3. Next week (Tuesday) is Addison's first ever dance recital. It is just an "enrichment" activity at her school, but she loves it and I am looking forward to seeing her. She likes to practice at home, and she dances to everything.

4. I had some stuff done to my car yesterday. While it may be a little silly, it made me feel great to do that. Self sufficient. Independent. Etc. So I am super pleased with all of it.

5. Today is my office best friend/office training partner's last day at work. I am super sad that he is leaving (we are likely out for our last office run when this post goes live), but I know it is what is best for him.

President's Day - + a track workout.

Monday was an interesting day this week. It was President's Day, and Addie's school was closed because it was a teacher in service. It being February, it is not a great time of year for me to not be working, and so J and I made some arrangements for his mom to watch Addie for the day. She works for a bank, and since it was a bank holiday, it worked out!

So Sunday afternoon, after giving J his Valentine gift (Addie and I got him a growler - filled of course, and a tee shirt from the brewery, plus cards), after Addie took her nap, we headed over to J's mom's house. The snow had started to fall, and the roads were already starting to get rough. Lucky for me, J was driving, so I did not have to worry. I was more anxious when Addie was with us than when she wasn't, and after we dropped her off, admittedly, I just played on facebook and instagram to not have to pay attention to the roads.

Anyway...

Because I did not have to take Addie to daycare on Monday, I was able to get up at my usual time, get ready, and drive to Blue Ash. The snow had stopped around 7 pm the night before, so roads were good. Because I did not have a two year old to wake up, get ready, and drop off at daycare. So I was at the gym by 6:30. Nailed it.

I was on the treadmill and then in my office before 8 am with an almost 9 mile run under my belt. That was a great way to start the day. On top of that, I had a pretty solid day at work when I was able to knock out a few big things that I had been struggling to get through for a little while. I am happy to be still moving forward though. It was nice to just have to worry about myself, which is something that I have not had for a long time.

FYI - I had a rough track workout today. It went well. It was successful. But it was hard. It is always hard to run fast and get uncomfortable, but I am working harder to find comfort in discomfort. Make sense?

Also, I took my new kit out of the track (but it was 19* so it was all covered up with wazzie wool and a pullover.) I LOVE IT.

A LIFE Update - in all aspects

So sometimes I feel like I am not writing enough about my life. I write more about running, generalities about being a mom, and an attempt to post food pictures occasionally, so today I just want to write. I think bullets might be the way to go on this.

1. Work is so overwhelming. We had a rough fall at the office operationally, and that definitely led to a lot of hours and a lot of work. We are starting to come out of it, I see the light at the end of the tunnel, and I am striding to get there. Fingers crossed that we can be back to "business as usual" come March.

2. My new race kit is supposed to be delivered tomorrow. I am SUPER excited, and I have spent extra time getting back to core work this week (I fell off the wagon a few weeks back).

3. Saving has been going pretty well. Every time I transfer $50 from my checking into my savings (I am trying to do this regularly), I feel like it is a victory.

4. I need to do taxes soon. I feel like that gives me a little bit of my "former" public accounting self (since I used to work in tax and now I just do "regular" accounting). Anyone else out there want me to do there taxes? I LOVE IT!

5. J's birthday is this weekend. I can't wait for him to see what Addie picked to give him (to give you a hint, I kept asking her for weeks what she wanted to get him, and she was very insistent that she wanted to give him "pancakes". Yep. Pancakes.)

6. I made a lot of progress in taking care of a few personal life items last week that had been hanging out on my to-do list for WEEKS. I am super pleased that I finally had time to do that. There are still a few lingering items on that list, but I am hoping to knock them out this week.

7. I owe several friends an email right now. See above. It is coming.

8.  Our audit is starting at the office. Just when I started to hope things would calm down. Here we go again.

9. I need to get back on the "reading" train. I nailed it in January, and then have already fallen off the wagon in February. I think it is my own fault for trying to read the third Game of Thrones book. They definitely take much longer to read than LOTS of other books. But I am more than halfway done!

10. I like listening to podcasts on my runs. How about all of you? Not sure how I feel about the new season of Serial yet, but I am listening.

11. I recently have seen lots of "viral posts" on facebook about loving people with various mental illnesses (yes, that might not have been the most politically correct way to put it, but as someone who suffers, I feel that I can call it what I want). This one is one of the best I have seen. At least, relating to things that I personally deal with. I have found some others that were good, but I like that one best, so far.

12. I am ready for it to warm up a little. The "normal" temperatures for this time of year are in the 40s and we have been seeing 20s and colder. I wish we could get  up to normal. That would be ideal for training!

Olympic Trials Marathon

Saturday was the Olympic Trials marathon. As a runner, especially as a runner who has been following Kara Goucher's career every since getting the book "Running for Women" rather aimlessly at the beginning of her own running career, this is one of the biggest sporting events in my world.

And now that I am teammates with Kara, I love her even more.

In my head, I kind of thought the best team going in for the women was going to be the 2012 team again. I had discussed it with my local running buddies - Karen and Charlie, and I even spoke to J about it. He liked Kara and Shalene, and on the mens side he liked Meb & Rupp. On the men's side I liked Meb and Dathan Ritz, but I really was not sure beyond that where things were going...

I finished up my run shortly after the men took off. I had it recording on the DVR, so I was kind of excited knowing that I could skip the early commercials because I was ready to get running.

I went along with my team for #singletsaturday and donned the singlet for my run and kept it on for the race.
To be clear, this is the old version of the singlet, it was just the first one that I found when looking because it was hanging up downstairs.

I watched the whole trials, the whole television experience. I think I caught up to the actual television about 45 minutes in to the race. I just loved loved loved watching it.

Obviously, I love Kara, and I was heartbroken with her 4th place finish. But I do think we have a good team set up to go to the Olympics. I know that a lot of people were feeling the same way about Hasty Hastings four years ago as I feel about Kara right now. I get it. But I am so happy for everyone who ran the race, and especially Kara for proving that she has still got it.

Training Recap: Week of February 8

Another week of training is in the books! This was a light week (relatively) and I enjoyed giving my legs a bit of a break, because I had been running the hell out of them for quite some time.
I definitely needed to take this week a little bit slower overall. I have spent the last several weeks running much harder than prescribed, mostly just due to stress. Things have been really hectic with work and home, and the stress has led to a few of what I like to call "rage runs". Which basically means running hard because it releases any stresses that I have had.

So let's take a look at last week, my step back week.

Monday: 6.2 miles #nuunyeardash!
Tuesday: 5 miles on the treadmill. 8:27 average
Wednesday: 6.64 miles - 6 miles with 4x30s strides, 7:57 average
Thursday: 50 minutes on the elliptical
Friday: 5 miles at 8:47 pace (finally! a TRUE easy pace day!)
Saturday: 10 mile long run
Sunday OFF

32.84 total miles. Not bad for a light week.

This week things are picking up again, and I am pretty excited for it. I am ready to knock this goal race out of the park!

Friday Five XV

The 15th straight week of posting a Friday Five? What?!?
But that has given me something to really work on and keep track of. 15 weeks!

1. I got my new planner this week. I ordered the Plum Family Planner from Plum Paper based on some recommendations from Karen. I ordered it to start in March knowing that it was going to be into February by the time I received it. And I already LOVE it and have been filling it in.
(FYI - I am not at all affiliated with Plum Paper, I just love this planner and purchased it myself!)

2. I purchased the first thing on my "list" when it went on sale over the weekend. The Aero tights in deep sea. I felt like when they went on sale, it was a SIGN. So I bought them immediately. If I love them, I may need to consider the red ones.

3. We have been doing awesome with meal planning at our house. In general, we are eating out once per week, which is fine where we are. I am VERY happy with that, and very happy that it has helped with grocery shopping, etc. So, I really want to keep this up!

4. I have had a week where I feel like I have accomplished a lot in and around the office. There is a lot of things that we have going on, and I am very happy to have been able to make a lot of progress around what I need to work through. I am hoping to continue to work through all of my work requirements as I know that we are going to continue to fall down the rabbit hole with overwhelming amounts of things to do. Also - I want to express how grateful I am to work with awesome people.

5. I think we turned a corner with potty training. We are not there yet, but she has been telling me "I peed!" right after going and then sitting on the potty. I feel like this is what happens first? Any moms out there? Can you tell me?

Race Recap: Nuun Year Dash 2016

My first "race" of 2016 was on Monday. It was a virtual race, the Nuun Year Dash, and I found out about it through Nuun Hydrations social media channels, as well as through FitFam, who some of my Oiselle teammates have been trying to get me to join for quite a while. (Ok, everyone, I have signed up).
I signed up for the 10K, knowing I would have a weekday in the time range where I could just run 6 miles, or a long run where I could call my "middle 6" the race. As mentioned previously, this week ended up falling into my down week, so I used my 6 miles on Monday to extend slightly into 6.2 and that was my virtual race.

It was pretty cold out, but I was trying to make sure that I got chances to run outside since I knew we were expecting snow later, and I hate trying to fight the slipping and sliding that comes along with a snow day.
So I headed out. Because I am not racing officially (I don't really count virtual races, it was more of a training run), I knew I was going to need to take it fairly easy. Last week was a pretty rough one on my legs as far as mileage went and paces. I pretty much ran easy 0% of the time. I don't count the long run as easy for a few reasons.
1. Its a long run. Those are always hard.
2. I ran THIS even 15s per mile faster than my easy run pace.

Here was my route. I ran the 6.2 miles in 8:14 average, which again, I am happy with considering all of the things that I have going on.
Nailed it!

Speaking of nailed it, results were posted yesterday. I was a big winner.
I interpret this as "the most average of all averages and people that are average." BOOM. :)

A Review & giveaway! SLS3 Running Belt

An opportunity for a running product blog review came to me by way of my friend Karen. Karen is not a blogger, but knows that I am, and knows that I am more than willing to try new things. So she passed along an invitation that she received, and as a result, I was given an SLS3 dual pocket running belt. I received the one in the blue color, and I was looking forward to really testing it out, both wearing it for speed work and a long run.
Now I have tried two different running belts in the past (not to be named here), and I have had different issues with them in the past. You occasionally have the bounce that comes with a belt, or it might ride up or slip down, or you could not be able to fit all of the things in it that you need for a long run. 

With the dual pocket design of the SLS3 belt, I definitely did not have to worry about finding a home for my iphone in one pocket (for music), and plenty of gels in the other. Now, I only ran 12 miles this past weekend, so I only needed one gel, but I tested it out, and I was able to fit 8 gels along with my iphone. And I could put 6 of them in one pocket, which was relief after I lost two on the course in Indianapolis. 
The blue? That is the zippers on the pocket. ALL of that is pocket. And I know it looks pretty narrow, but the way that the pocket itself rolls up keeps it small and you can just kind of unfold the belt to make more room in it if you need to hold six gels.

First up was a track workout. I didn't have any gels with me, but I wanted to make sure that I had the opportunity to try it more than once, and I was only going to have one long run that I wasn't doing on the treadmill, because of trying to work things around with J's weekend work schedule at this time of year. So I wore it for a 10 minute warmup, a fartlek ladder, and a 10 minute cooldown.
The big thing to keep in mind relating to this was that I kept my phone in the running belt  for the duration of this run. It stayed in its place and rested on my hip throughout the run. One of the biggest complaints that I have with other products is the bounce when I keep my phone in the belt. I had no trouble with the belt stay in place, slipping down, etc. I consider the first run I had with it successful.

Later that weekend, I stuffed it full of gels (even though I only needed one for a 12 miler) and my phone in the second pocket. This allowed me to test the expansion of the belt, along with the ease of the zipper while on the move. I spent a little bit of time playing with the zipper prior to heading out for my run, just to make sure I was feeling comfortable (runners do this kind of thing), and then headed out. 6 miles in, I continued running, unzipped one of the pockets, and pulled the gel out and re-zipped the pocket with no trouble. Success!

Overall, I really enjoyed this belt, and felt like it would be a good investment for someone who has lots of things that they want to carry (keys, phone, credit card, ID, gels, etc) but does not what any bouncing when the pocket gets more full.

Recipe 2 of 12

So because I am working on checking a few items off of my goals for the year listing, I am really working to make sure that I am trying new stuff all of time. As you may remember, I am working to try and cook 12 new recipes in 2016, and already last week (first week of February) I tackled another.

Last Thursday I made a new recipe that I had pulled off the internet when I found it looking for different chicken recipes on the Cooking Light website.

I made this recipe with no modifications. I just used Busch Light beer because we have lots in the fridge, and we don't really drink it. At all. So I figured it would probably be the best choice even if it was not as flavorful as some beers I could have chosen.

I got the chicken cooking first in a pan.
The pieces were a bit thick, so I got them browned up and then put them in the oven on a pizza pan, figuring that way I  could ensure that they were cooked through. While the chicken was cooking, I got all of my sauce ingredients set up.
I used liquid aminos instead of soy sauce, but that is what I always do.

I reduced the sauce while the chicken was cooking through in the oven, and then was able to get the chicken into the pan while I worked on a few side dishes.
When  you have a two year old, you sometimes make concessions in your vegetable selections and cross your fingers that you have a better shot the next day (as you serve a starchy vegetable and a starch as side dishes - bread and mashed potatoes).
Regardless, this meal turned out  awesome, and I am super pumped to make it again. Even Addie liked the chicken! Given a little bit more prep time (meaning - I hope I get home from work a smidge earlier next time) I think I would like to roast some brussels sprouts to go with this.

Training Recap: Week of February 1

Yeah... So I am approximately 11 weeks out from the Mercy Health Glass City Marathon, which is obviously my "A" race for spring. I have pretty much been working toward it since Indianapolis, but I have only recently started to actually put in the work that is needed to achieve my goals.
So anyway, let's take a look at last week's training!

Monday: 8 miles with 4x30s strides AT THE LAKE, 8.57 total miles
Tuesday: 7 miles, convo pace, full body strength workout
Wednesday: 8.83 miles - fartlek ladder
Thursday: 7 miles - this run was supposed to be easy paced, but unfortunately I completely failed on that and ended up averaging approx 30s per mile faster than I was supposed to.
Friday: 50 minutes, elliptical
Saturday: 12 miles convo pace
Sunday: off

43.40 running miles.
1 day xt
1 strength training

Another week of nailing it?

This week is a down week for me, which might be a little weird, because I have been in the mood to RUN ALL THE MILES for several weeks now. But considering my easy run was at approximately 8:15 pace this past week, I really need to take a step back and do the runs that I am SUPPOSED to do, instead of all the miles.

Friday Five: XIV

All right. I have managed to survive this week. It was definitely up there in the hardest weeks EVER, but it is Friday, and I am here. Thank goodness.

So how about a little Friday Five?
1. It has been a really long week. In the office and at home, but I am happy to have been able to get through all of the things that I did this week. It certainly was not an easy week by any stretch of the imagination, and let's be honest, no one likes to be in a situation where they feel stressed out a lot. But I know that I will end up stronger for it. PLEASE?!?

2. Addie and Rapunzel have been hanging out this week. They are obviously best friends.

3. I am trying to plan something special for J's birthday this year. Sometimes I get overwhelmed and drop the ball, and I do not want that to happen this year. More to come.

4. I have had 4 runs already this week, and I am feel tired. I am pretty grateful (who AM I?) that today I am going to spend my lunch time on the elliptical rather than on the treadmill or pounding the pavement. Every once in a while you need a reprieve. Today, I need one.

5. It is the 5th of February already, and I have no idea how it got to be this date. Seriously. How the hell did this happen? I started something new on Feb 1, I will post a picture of it soon, but it is a journaling exercise that will hopefully help me to achieve one of my goals (do more for ME). I am working hard to be a better person...

Monday run - new location

I have been trying pretty hard to get posts written in advance in general. I have been doing pretty well with that, but every once in a while, you want to be able to write a more timely update. Something that is happening more in the minute.

So today I want to talk about my run from Monday, because although I ran from the office, and ran in Blue Ash, which is where I have worked for 5.5 years, and where I lived for 4 ish years, I have never run in this place. I have not ever run over to this particular park or even driven in this park and gone for a run or walk. In fact, I think I have only been to this park one time ever, for a cookout with my employer (I THINK).

So anyway, the park is called Sharon Woods. I did not really have anything in particular as far as workouts goes on the schedule, just 8 miles with 4x30s strides. Convo pace.

So Charlie had mentioned to me earlier that he had done this exact run earlier that morning, and knew that I was in the middle of a struggle fest in all senses of the word. I just was having all of the issues happening, which was not a great way to start out the week. I don't want to go into them, but suffice to say, I needed a distracting run.

So that is not what the lake looks right now, it is after all, January, but it was still beautiful. It is three miles around and it is just over 2 miles to get there, so I was going to end around 7.7 miles to run to the lake, around it, and back. PERFECT.

So the other part that he mentioned to me that I managed to forget about until I got there? HILLS. He did tell me, I did have advance warning. But dammit. I was not expecting QUITE so many!

So here are my splits.
Mile 1: 8:14
Mile 2: 8:07
Mile 3: 8:22

Strides after that, for an average pace of 8:12. Yeah... I flew on the strides. It was a good run and I was really glad to be reminded of where to run.

I am focused on SAVING

As I mentioned one day last week (I cannot remember what day, I think it was Wednesday?) I am coming up with a list of things that I am working to save my money for. One of my unmentioned goals of the year is to be better about spending. Be more deliberate when I spend money, and really work for what I want. I mean, it is not as though I am hurting for money, but it cannot hurt to work harder and try more to spend appropriately, right?

There are reasons for this, of course, to model good things to Addie is the most important. To help to show her that we work hard and save our money in order to get the things we want. I am tempted to start the "allowance" process with her already, even at two. Does anyone have experience with that, by the way? Thoughts or suggestions?

So here is my "saving" list for the year.

1. This is the highest thing on the list as of now. It is a biggie, but an important one. Build my personal savings account up to $3000. Now, that does not seem like a ton, but I really want to get there. And I am more than willing to really really take my time and do this. However long it takes while still allowing myself to purchase these OTHER items around it.

2. Aero tights. I have been lusting after these since they were released in the fall. My runlove partner as well as one of my Ragnar teammates both seem to LOVE them.
I want this color too.

3. Stride shorts mini - printed. I have not seen the printed ones released on the Oiselle website yet, but I have seen a picture on facebook from a few different of the elite teammates. But here are the non-print shorts.
4. My NASM personal training study materials. I mentioned in my goals post that I had made progress, and I have decided that this is where I am going to start with all of my certifications. But the materials and exam are not super cheap, so I am saving.

5. More Oiselle. The holepunch lux sweatshirt specifically. I saw this on Lauren Fleshman on twitter and immediately thought... I MUST HAVE THAT.
This might be the first thing I purchase because I know ALL of my teammates want this, and I do NOT want to miss out. The fit of this one is a little different, so I am struggling to decide what size I need to purchase. I have been following any and all posts on this on our team facebook page, because I think a lot of ladies are feeling similarly.

6. A tablet for Addison. I just think this is a good idea for car rides and dinners out. With input from Karen (who purchased one for her three year old son for Christmas) I am leaning toward the Kindle fire. This may be a bday gift for her.

January Goal Review

Somehow it is already the second of February. I am not sure how we have already gotten through the first month of 2016, but it has happened. As a result, I want to take a quick peek at my 2016 goals and see how things are coming along.

1. Run the year.
I am at 184.24 miles through January. To be clear on this, 2015 was a pretty good mileage year for me, and my highest mileage month was 177 in September (marathon training). I need to average 168 miles per month to hit this. Fingers crossed that the momentum continues.

2. Travel to someplace new.
Not yet, obviously, unless you count a new local brewery that we visited?

3. Read 52 books
I read 4 books in January, and started the 5th. I picked a long one for number 5 (the third book in the Game of Thrones series) so I am aware of the fact that I am slowing down the momentum on this for the moment. But you can't simply fly through 100 page books all the time.

4. Write 200 blog posts. 
I wrote 22 posts in January, which puts me at 179 to go? I need to average 17 posts per month to meet my goal, so I would say this one is checked off.

5. Take Addison to Bronners
Nope, but have discussed with my sister.

6. Work on the development of the team at work
So far, I am working on stepping out of my comfort zone and spending more time with folks when they have questions and really going through things on them and trying to make sure that I am being available. I think that is the biggest goal.

7. Do one thing for myself EVERY DAY
So far: check.

8. Cook 12 new recipes.
I made that macaroni and cheese earlier this month. Twas delicious and I was able to have lunch for days!


9. Show my coworkers and team more of "Runner Emily"
Obviously, no real way definitions around that, but I am working on it. And I am doing ok and keeping my head up and smiling. It is a start?

10. Figure out certifications
Progress. I have made progress. More to come.

Training Recap: Week of January 25

Another week of long mileage is in the books. I mean, no, this is not like the mileage that I hope to hit in my fall marathon cycle (fingers crossed that there is a fall marathon cycle for me!), but for being like 12 weeks out from a half marathon, I am kicking ass and taking names.
First up, I got to do lots more OUTSIDE running this week, which I am THRILLED about. The weather was better enough to run outside throughout the week even though a few days were cold. But Saturday was on the TM as usual, making it work. I have to make sure to do outdoor running frequently, even though it is winter. It is important.

So let's look at the week.

Monday: 7 miles with strides. 7.59 total.
Tuesday: 1 hour run, convo pace. 7.33 miles
Wednesday: 50 minutes elliptical, strength
Thursday: track workout. 4x1 mile right into a 50 m all out, with 1 minute recovery. 9.21 total miles
Friday: 6 miles, easy pace with Charlie
Saturday: 7 miles.
Sunday: 7 miles.

44.45 miles run.
1 strength session.
1 xt session.

So, I think this is basically an "I nailed it" week? At least, that is how I feel right now. I am not sure how I have pulled off a switch so solidly in my head from "I am not sure my head is in to running" to "must run all the miles!" but it has happened.
